Get to know us - Kat Thompson

Can you tell us a bit about your role within the team and what your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

As Director and Co-founder of ZestHR, no two days are the same!  My focus is really on growing the ZestHR brand and chatting to clients about how we can support them.  This includes going to networking events, writing proposals and connecting with clients.  When it comes to the consulting work we do, I lead the organisational development and strategy space.  I get to work with business leaders to develop and engage their talent to achieve their business goals.  And best of all, I get to work with our fantastic team.

How did you start your career in HR, and what led you to your current position?

I find most HR professionals have an interesting story about how they got into HR, mine is no different.  I was a makeup artist by trade, travelling globally to work on incredible events.  Through this work I started teaching makeup artistry and discovered I was more passionate about the teaching than the makeup.  So, I completed a Bachelors of Learning and Organisational Development and fell in love.  I worked in Learning & Development and then leading Organisational Development teams.  As my career progressed, I ended up in an Executive role looking after Strategy, Brand and Culture.  This is where I got to weave people (HR) practices into strategic and operational practices and saw how impactful doing this well can be.  Meanwhile Alex and I had started dreaming about the future of work and the role we wanted to play in making that a reality, so ZestHR was born.

What are the key skills you believe are necessary for success in your role, and how have you developed these over your career?

My role is all about possibilities and dreaming big, both for ZestHR and for our clients.  Seeing the big picture, the interconnectedness of things and finding the simplest and most effective solution is what gets me excited.  Peopling, of course is critical in HR and in running a business.  I am so grateful that I get to spend my days chatting to fascinating people and working on interesting projects with incredible businesses.  I am a big advocate of working on yourself, whether that be through coaching, mentoring, therapy or development programs.  The moment we stop pushing ourselves to grow and evolve we start moving backwards.

Can you share a professional achievement you are particularly proud of?

I think getting an Executive role and starting a business before I am 40 is something I am really proud of.  Empowering women to back themselves and step into these spaces deeply drives me.  I am proud to have been able to role-model it myself and want to do everything I can to lift other women and diverse folks up and help create opportunities for visibility and representation.
