We're excited to welcome another team member at ZestHR - Simon Ratcliffe. We asked Simon to tell him a bit about himself so you can get to know him.
What do you love most about working in the HR consulting industry?
I love being able to use my years of experience and wisdom with our clients when discussing solutions with them. When you work at a consultancy, you firmly have a seat at the table and can really make a difference in the company you’re engaging with. I love the diversity of the clients that we work with, too. I like to meet new people and getting to understand what they want to achieve and helping them create a solution that’s not only practical but fits their ‘why’ and sets them up for success.
Share your favourite innovation that impacts your work?
Corny, but I think my favourite innovation is my career so far, and the person that’s shaped me to be. I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible people, at amazing places and on some very exciting projects. Before I started my HR journey, I worked for several years in operations and project management. From project managing a Halloween event at the UK’s biggest theme park to being an Operations Manager at the world’s leading aquarium brand, it’s been a rollercoaster for sure! I believe leading people well takes true grit and determination and having worked operationally has given me true appreciation of having a present, open-door HR function which is fundamental in the success of any team or business. I’ve been fortunate to have many incredible managers in my career that have taught me the art of compassion, consistency, and fairness, which I think is (almost) halfway to being a great leader!
Are you a cat or dog person?
I love all animals and having moved to Australia recently; I’m fascinated by the different flora and fauna here. If I had to pick one or the other, I am a dog person. I have a Miniature Dachshund called Max who we shipped over from the UK, however, he may well be a cat given the amount of time he sleeps, and his utter refusal to go out when it’s raining!
What’s your favourite Skittles colour?
Skittles are my favourite go-to sweet and like all the flavours, though I do separate the colours out and eat my least favourite flavour/colour first. Yellow, green, orange, purple, red! Does anybody else do this?
What would your ideal HR project with a client look like?
That’s a great question. For most of my working life, I have worked for a global leisure and tourism company that had its customers and employees at the heart of everything , and this has very much been ingrained into my thought process in the HR space. I started my HR journey in training and development, moving into the recruitment space before working into employee relations/HR business partnering so have broad experience across the whole employee cycle. My ideal client would be one that may need an end-to-end review of their business which has stemmed from multiple people issues or recent changes to their operations etc. I love applying my skills in the continual improvement space to investigate the root cause of issues and build up a solution from there. I absolutely love working with clients that don’t just need practical support but need assistance in creating vibrant cultures to enable them, their employees, and businesses to thrive, much like us at ZestHR!
